Resume Building and Online Portfolio Workshop Recap

On Thursday February 26th, the Rider Public Relations Society held a Resume Building and Online Portfolio Workshop for Communications Majors. The two speakers for the event were Lauren Nicolosi and Professor Jessi Franko. Both speakers work at Rider University; Lauren is a Career Advisor and Jessi is a Graphic Design professor.

During this workshop, Lauren provided students with tips and tricks to starting and tailoring their resumes. She used the Rider Career Guide booklet to give students different examples for resume designs and headings. She discussed the importance of starting to build your resume as early as freshman year, whether it is with clubs and other campus activities or work experience. She stressed that it is important to get in different experiences before your senior year.

Jessi covered the topic of online portfolios. She stressed the benefits of having an online portfolio in the digital world we have entered recently and provided students with different kinds of portfolio options. A few included Weebly, Coroflot, Behance, and Wordpress. All communications students or professionals can use online portfolios whether it is for graphic design, photography, or Public Relations work, all benefit from having their work posted online. Jessi stated that by making your work more accessible online, there are greater opportunities for someone to see your work and hire you for a job.

Both speakers answered questions from students following their presentations and offered the opportunity to help with resumes and portfolios after the workshop. Guests at the workshop were also provided light snacks and had the chance to meet other students within the Communications Program.
